Mica heaters

Mica band heaters

We produce mica band heaters to order – in any shape and size. Mica elements are best suited where very high temperatures are not required – mainly in the plastics and rubber industries, for heating extruder elements and for the indirect heating of tanks. The most efficient way to indirectly heat a cylindrical machine element (a pipe, drum or extruder head) is with a band heater.

Key characteristics

The mica band heater is the most common form of band heater – reliable and efficient in most work processes, with a maximum working temperature of 480°C. With various degrees of electrical enclosure, clamping mechanisms and the option of holes and cut-outs, it is used successfully in many applications, but is sought after above all in the plastics industry. It delivers long, trouble-free operation at the temperatures around 350°C needed to process high-temperature resins in modern plastic extruders and injection-moulding machines.

The insulation – mica

We use various top-grade types of mica. The thickness of each mica layer is chosen carefully to balance insulation performance against ease of heat transfer to the machine drum.

The heating coil – kanthal

The heating ribbon is not limited to the capabilities of nichrome wire – we consider different alloys for different applications. The inner winding is designed for even heat distribution. The heaters are rounded and shaped to optimise their grip on the machine drum, and the outer metal jacket is a special alloy that expands less than the drum when heated – so the heater grips the drum firmly, which improves heat transfer and significantly extends its life.

Mica or ceramic? Which to choose?

Customers often come to us with a ceramic band heater bought together with their equipment. After discussing the process – specifically the constant working temperature – we frequently conclude that a ceramic heater is unnecessary. Ceramic bands handle about 200°C more than mica ones, but most cases need no more than 300°C, which our mica bands manage easily. On top of that, a mica heater is cheaper and can be made in a day. For outdoor use or environments with a contamination risk, see the flexible heater – hermetically sealed and resistant to moisture.
